Welcome to WBAE

West Bengal Academy of Echocardiography (WBAE) is the state branch of Indian Academy of Echocardiography. It was founded in 2007 as a body registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 (Regn.No.S/IL/48416 of 2007-2008). It was conceived by the founders of WBAE that the academy will preach and promote the practice of echocardiography in the state, both at basic and advanced levels and extend the facility of echocardiography to needy and poor patients free of charges as often as possible.

Ever since its inception, the academy has been organizing state-of-the-art conferences once every year featuring didactic lectures by internationally and nationally renowned faculty, live-workshops, case-presentation, echo-quiz etc. The conferences have been very well-attended and popular among echocardiographers and clinicians alike and attracted both senior and junior cardiologists. In its last three versions, the conference has acquired a new dimension. Now known as EZECHO, it assembles the entire eastern zone under its umbrella.

The Academy also boasts of having published a high-quality treatise on Echocardiography titled “Echocardiography in Clinical Practice”. The publication has been very well-received across the nation.

The Academy has not lagged behind in philanthropic activities either. It regularly holds echo-camps to extend the facility of echocardiography to needy patients free of charge.

Training Programmes

Training Programmes have been another forte of WBAE. A unique feature of the training programmes is that they combine practical tips on common cardiac practice topics along with hands-on training in echocardiography on actual patients suffering from a diverse range of cardiac ailments.

Over a hundred doctors have so far been trained by the academy in a series of courses, each lasting nine days (five hours daily). There is a growing demand amongst the budding community of young ambitious cardiologists to acquire this kind of practice-oriented training in echocardiography and clinical cardiology in order to enhance and refine their individual professional practice.

The faculty for the training program comprises of eminent senior cardiologists in the city and also from various teaching hospitals. The course is accredited by the West Bengal Medical Council.

Funds have been generated from tuition fees from candidates attending the training programs as well as from conferences by way of providing exhibition stalls to pharmaceutical houses and echocardiography-device industry. Unrestricted academic grants have also been generated from the same sources for organizing scientific sessions.

Funds thus generated have solely been used for two major purposes  :

  • Academic upgradation and training of doctors in order to enable them provide echocardiography services to the community at par with national and international standards
  • Providing free echocardiography services to poor patients who need it for assessment of their ailments and further treatment.

Beyond these immediate goals, long-term goals are intended to augment our endeavour of training more doctors and reaching out to more needy patients.

Having made a very humble beginning, the Academy is now has around 120 life-members in its fold and is known as a reputed scientific, academic and philanthropic body all over the country.
